I've been whooping around my flat all fucking morning WE HAVE GAY MARRIAGE!!! And though I live in a politically shitty province, I live in an AMAZING country!

Now for those across the pond, 6 provinces and 1 territory have already been acknowledging same-sex marriage for a little while now, but it is now going into legislation to make it legal across the country. The Supreme Court has ruled in favour of gay marriage and that marriage is a federal issue, not provincial so we after the Justic Minister gets legislation passed (6 months to a year) all provinces will be forced to acknowledge same-sex marriage as legal. Now of course, there are clauses that apparently going to allow provinces to get around this and you know Alberta is stupid enough to use these clauses, though many experts are saying AB won't be able to, I'm pretty pessimistic, cynical, and suspicious of Klein's gov't in this matter.

Anyhoo, I'm sick and can't really be coherent, but just wanted to share my utter and complete joy here.

I believe the supreme court simply voted that the government has the right to ADDRESS the issue (i.e. put it to a referendum) under the constitution. They didn't vote to make it legal, they just gave the gov't authority to change the definition of marriage to 2 persons if the gov't chooses to.

Now, I'm guessing that Stephen Harper or Ralph Klein type pricks WOULDN'T
